Biennial Strategic Goals

The Board of Directors recently adopted the following five strategic goals to guide Montana VOAD during the 2010 – 2012 Biennium:

 ▪        Establish regional, community-based VOADs that correspond to the Montana Disaster & Emergency Services (MT DES) districts,

 ▪        Develop a consortium-based plan for animal sheltering in time of disaster and work to have that plan adopted by the State of Montana,

 ▪        Develop a consortium-based plan for multi-agency feeding in time of disaster (e.g., NVOAD Multi-Agency Feeding Template) and work to have that plan adopted by the State of Montana,

 ▪        Develop and adopt a MTVOAD plan for receiving notification of disasters/potential disasters and for responding by activating the consortium at an appropriate level, and

 ▪        Develop and adopt a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between MTVOAD and the State of Montana concerning responsibilities based upon the MOU between NVOAD and FEMA.

Celebrating 40 Years of Service

On Tuesday, MTVOAD members Lura Cayton (Church World Service), Jay DeBoer (Christian Reformed World Relief Committee), and Colleen Tone (American Red Cross) gathered in Orlando to celebrate the 40th anniversary of National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster.  An awards dinner culminated the first day of the 18th Annual NVOAD Conference which was also devoted to two day-long programs: VOAD Leadership Development Track or VOAD Education Series (Long-term Recovery.)  Two more days will be devoted to 36 workshops ranging from disaster case management to surviving a disaster with pets.  In the State and Territory VOAD meeting conducted on Tuesday afternoon, the following initiatives were announced:

-         The State Advisory Committee to NVOAD will be working on membership standards for state and community activities using the brand name “VOAD” or the VOAD logo,

-         NVOAD will be adopting National Response Framework standards for the membership which correspond to the federal NSFs,

-         NVOAD will rolling out a new web page with links to all State/Territory VOAD web sites,

-         Points of Consensus will be proposed for adoption this week on Disaster Case Management and Rebuild and Repair Standards, and

-         Next year the State/Territory VOADs will be electing representatives to all NVOAD committees.
